All about living in Baza, Granada, Spain

Baza is in the far eastern area of Granada province and boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in Spain. With it's very large lake near the villages of Zujar and Freila, and a backdrop of mountains and plains it truly is an area of great variety and beauty, yet unspoilt and still the real Spain that many visitors and those seeking a new life are hoping to find.

Access to the Baza area is very good with the A92n motorway running alongside the northern edge of the town. The historic city of Granada with it's ski resort and the world famous Alhambra Palace is only one hour to the west. The Mediterranean motorway is similarly only one hour from Baza to the East and a new motorway directly linking to the coast is being constructed, cutting traveling time to the beach from one and a half hours to one hour. Granada airport is one hour to the West, Almeria airport one hour forty five minutes to the South and Alicante and Murcia airports one hour forty five minutes to the East.

As with nearly all towns and villages in Spain, Baza has a large market place on the site of the old railway station, and there are markets held in nearly all the surrounding villages. Vegetables, fruit, a variety of clothing and household goods can be purchased at very reasonable prices in a friendly and bustling atmosphere.

Unlike many towns of it's size, Baza is blessed with a modern hospital and a large variety of shops. The older sectors of Baza are full of narrow streets with cafes / bars, that suddenly open out into Plazas with old churches or small parks and childrens play areas. Some of the best shopping is to be found in these areas and are well worth a visit. This is definitely NOT a little piece of the UK imported to Spain. The local population are very friendly and welcoming and justifiably proud of Baza and it’s surrounding countryside.
